DR. EARL DOUGLAS: “A Tale of Three Dentists” is an article I wrote for Dental Economics, and it explains the benefits of being prepared at all times for an untimely death or a disability. The article describes what happened to three dentists who happened to pass away in one year. What I decided from this experience in this article was to provide dentists with a way to safeguard one of their more valuable assets, their dental practice, and simply done, all the dentist has to do is fill out a form that lists all the information an appraiser or broker would need to evaluate and sell the practice. The form can be given to any broker or any appraiser. I don’t mean it to be a self-serving thing, but this can save a surviving spouse an incredible amount of stress, because they have no idea what to look for, where to look, whom to call, or what to do. Usually when they do figure it out, it’s too late, and they’ve lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in value, plus gone through enormous stress. So this is a gift to the profession from us, that dentists can protect themselves and have a free life insurance policy for their practice.
